Rebecca Eaton

Dr. Rebecca M. Doran Eaton serves as Senior Lecturer in Music Theory and Aural Skills.  She earned a Ph.D. in Music Theory from the University of Texas at Austin in 2008 and joined the faculty of the Texas State School of Music the same year.  Before arriving at Texas State she taught theory and aural skills at the University of Texas at Austin and the University of Louisville, where she earned a Master of Music in Composition. 

Dr. Eaton’s interdisciplinary research, published in The Ashgate Research Companion to Minimalist and Postminimalist Music and Music and the Moving Image, combines film music studies, music theory, semiotics, and historical musicology to unravel the history and function of minimal music in popular American cinema and television.  Other research interests include anempathy and parody in film scores. 

Dr. Eaton has presented her research at conferences including the 3rd International Conference on Minimalist Music in Leuven, Belgium, the 11th International Congress on Musical Signification in Krakow, Poland, the 2nd International Conference on Minimalist Music, the Texas Society for Music Theory annual conference, the conference of the Society for American Music, and Music and the Moving Image. 

At Texas State University, Dr. Eaton teaches undergraduate courses in music theory, aural skills, and film music, graduate-level Theory and Comprehensive Musicianship (Music Theory Pedagogy), and serves on music theory M.M. thesis committees.
