School of Music Piano Proficiency Requirements

*Piano proficiency is required of all music majors.*

There are 2 levels of proficiency:

  • Level II (completed at the conclusion of piano II)
  • Level IV (completed at the conclusion of piano IV)

Piano majors (classical and jazz) must complete a specific proficiency exam for pianists. Contact Dr. Kwak for the requirements.

The following majors must complete up to Level II:

  • BM - Music Studies (Instrumental)
  • BM - Performance (Jazz)
  • BS - Sound Recording Technology
  • BA - Music

The following majors must complete up to Level IV:

  • BM - Music Studies (Choral)
  • BM - Performance (All Instrumental, Vocal)

NOTE:

BM - Music Studies (Instrumental), BM - Performance (Jazz), and BA majors must complete the Piano Proficiency II Exam in order to pass your ULCR.

BM - Music Studies (Vocal) and BM - Performance (All Instrumental & Vocal) majors must complete Piano Techniques III in order to pass your ULCR.

BM - Music Studies (Choral) must then complete the Piano Proficiency IV Exam no later than the semester before Student Teaching and BM - Performance (All Instrumental & Vocal) no later than the semester you are due to graduate.

No Piano Proficiency Exam is required for students pursuing the SRT degree program.

Non-piano major students wishing to test out of piano should prepare the exam appropriate to their degree (see PDF above). When they are ready to take the test, they should contact Dr. Bartz (eb28@txstate.edu) to set up an appointment.
