The Piano Department at Texas State University is pleased to present its Piano Day. This day will feature many aspects of our thriving piano program. Piano Day will include lessons, masterclasses, and mini-workshops in important subjects such as accompanying, pedagogy, and career options. Students will work closely with our highly qualified piano professors. The day will conclude with a recital by current and former Texas State University piano majors.

Eligibility 

Piano students in grade levels 9-12 are eligible to apply.

Teachers and parents are encouraged to attend all events during the day. 

Deadlines/Fees 

January 20   \   Application video/$15 student registration fee due; no late applications

January 25   \   Notification of acceptance

February 1   \    $40 student participation fee due, if accepted; $15 meal fee due for the accompanying adults and teachers

Breakfast and lunch will be provided.

Repertoire

Application Requirements

Send a YouTube link to dsr51@txstate.edu.

YouTube video should contain one item from each category: 

a) a Baroque composition (Scarlatti, Bach - inventions or WTC), or a movement of a Classical-period sonata (Clementi, Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven)

b) a Romantic-period piece (Mendelssohn, Chopin, Liszt, Brahms, Grieg, etc.), or an etude (Cramer, Chopin, Liszt, etc.)

Memorization is required.

Competition Requirements

Repertoire should contain one item from each category: 

a) a Baroque composition (Scarlatti, Bach - inventions or WTC), or a movement of a Classical-period sonata (Clementi, Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven)

b) a Romantic-period piece (Mendelssohn, Chopin, Liszt, Brahms, Grieg, etc.), or an etude (Cramer, Chopin, Liszt, etc.)

Competition repertoire can be the same as the application repertoire.

Total performance duration should not exceed 10 minutes. If you have longer pieces, be prepared to be stopped. 

Memorization is required.

Lessons

We ask that, at least, one piece is prepared for the private lessons. Memorization is not required.

TEXAS STATE UNIVERSITY PIANO DAY 2024 SCHEDULE

SoM - School of Music (101 Pleasant St.)

PERF - Performing Arts Center (430 Moon St.)

Currently, our schedule looks like this, with some minor changes possible:

- Check-in at the School of Music (SoM) lobby by 7:30am 

- Practice time 7:30-8:00am

- Breakfast at the SoM (pastries, coffee/tea): 8:00-8:30am

- Competition at the Performing Arts Center (PERF): 9:00-11:00am, open to the public. All participants remain in PERF during the competition. 

- Lunch at the SoM: 11:30am-12:30pm

- Lessons at the SoM: 12:30-3:30pm. Students who are finished with their lessons will be invited to attend the ongoing lessons.

- Q&A with our piano faculty at PERF: 4:00-4:45pm

- Recital by the faculty and TXST students at PERF: 5:00-6:00pm

- Announcement of the results at PERF: 6:00-6:30pm

1st Prize: piano area recommendation for acceptance to TXST piano program, plus full tuition to TSIPF 2024

2nd Prize: piano area recommendation for acceptance to TXST piano program, plus half tuition to TSIPF 2024
