Financial Opportunities for Texas State School of Music students include:

School of Music Scholarships


All music scholarships listed below are distributed through the ensemble directors after an audition. The audition for admission to the School of Music will count as the scholarship audition. A separate audition is not required. Renewal is available if all requirements are met and a renewal application is completed and submitted by the deadline in the Spring.


Student Service Fee Fine Arts Scholarships – Available to participants in the music program. Music Majors are given priority.

Anton J. Bek Symphony Orchestra Scholarship – Preference is given to string students.

Bowles/Wayne Scholarship - Recipients must be vocal music majors.

Archie Grusendorf Band Scholarship – Recipient must be a participant in the band program.

Herbert O. Esse Memorial Scholarship – Recipient should be a Music Education Major.

Elizabeth Korte Memorial Scholarship – Recipient should be a Piano Music Major.

Billy Gale Merritt Music Scholarship – Recipient should be a Music Major.

new! Clara Freshour Nelson Music Scholarship – Recipient may be undergraduate or graduate student. Awards up to full tuition and fees.

Reed B. Parr & Lewis A. Parr Music Scholarship – Recipient should be a Freshman Music Major. Renewable.

Lucille Aikin Patterson Scholarship – Recipients should be Vocal Music Majors. Preference given to females.

John & Mona Piersol Presidential Scholarship – Recipient must be a participant in the band program.

Benjamin M. Primer, Jr. Endowed Scholarship – Recipient must be a Junior or Senior Music Major.

Lola Jean Retherford Reese Band Scholarship – Recipient must be in their 3rd year of Bobcat Marching Band.

Frances Reuser Schneider Endowed Scholarship – Recipient must be from one of these counties in Texas: DeWitt, Goliad, Gonzales, Karnes, Lavaca or Victoria. Available to undergraduate or graduate students.

Gina Whitlock-Bowles – Recipient must be a Piano Music Major.The scholarships listed below have a different selection process than the ones above.

Genevieve B. Hawkins Piano Accompanying Scholarship – Recipient selected by piano faculty assisted by applied studio faculty input.

Woods Kone Endowed Music Scholarship – Recipients selected after audition before special committee each Spring semester. Recipients must be Junior or Senior Music Major. Award is for one year only.

Presser Foundation Scholarship – Recipient is selected by faculty vote, considering academic standing and extracurricular activities. Recipient should be a Junior or Senior Music Major. Award is for one year only.

Freshmen, transfer, continuing, and other students at Texas State University-San Marcos have the opportunity to apply and compete for a wide variety of academic scholarships through the Texas State General Scholarship Application. These awards can assist in defraying the costs associated with the pursuit of a higher education. Scholarships recognize and reward those students who commit themselves to academic excellence and success in a variety of areas.

Work/Study Employment

Several areas inside the School of Music have positions available for work/study students. These areas include: the School of Music Main Office, the School of Music Library, and the Music Computer Center. These positions are competitive, being staffed on a first-come-first-serve basis.

Teaching Assistantships

The School of Music offers Teacher Assistant (TAs) to individual graduate students based on their skills and expertise. Contact the Graduate Advisor for more information.
