String Area

String Area Student

The Texas State University String Area proudly offers a rich diversity of programs for string students of all backgrounds in a supportive, student-centered environment.

String students hone their performance skills in weekly applied lessons and studio classes led by our nationally recognized faculty.  Through participation in the Texas State Orchestra program led by Dr. Jacob Harrison, students tackle major works of the standard orchestral repertoire as well as new compositions, including a full range of orchestral experiences such as opera, chamber orchestra, and collaborations with choir and dance.  String students also participate in our chamber music program, in groups such as the Texas State Graduate String Quartet, a competitive fellowship ensemble comprised of graduate performance majors.  The Texas State Viola Ensemble and Cello Ensemble also perform regularly, enhancing opportunities for lower strings.

Students preparing for careers as string music educators in our highly regarded program enjoy many opportunities for career preparation.  Our String Music Education students gain valuable hands-on classroom and private lesson teaching experience in the Texas State String Project, while participating in professional development opportunities with our very active American String Teachers Association Student Chapter. For more information, please visit our String Music Education page.

In addition to the bowed orchestral strings, the Texas State String Area is also home to a vital Guitar program with excellent offerings for both Classical and Jazz guitarists.

Texas State is also home to nationally recognized programs in Sound Recording Technology, Latin Music Studies, and Jazz Studies.  Prospective students interested in these programs are encouraged to contact these areas directly for more information and application information and to schedule the requisite auditions and interviews.

For more information on our programs, majors or auditions, please review the Texas State School of Music website and contact our faculty directly if you have questions or would like to set up a sample lesson.  We look forward to hearing from you!
