Emphasis in Music Research

NOTE:    Students who do not achieve 70% on the music theory placement test will be required to take MU5357                                 Graduate Music Theory and Musicianship in addition to the degree requirements listed below.

Prerequisites:     Language Proficiency in either German, French, or Italian (2 years of high school instruction in one of these languages, or 2 semesters of college instruction)

Other Studies [Core] (12 credits):

    •    MU 5334 Introduction to Graduate Studies in Music
    •    2 Music Literature courses (choose from MU 5310, MU 5314, MU 5315, MU 5320, MU 5340, MU 5360, MU 5375)
    •    MU 5350 Musical Styles

Major Field (12 credits):

    •    MU 5355 Pedagogy of Music Theory
    •    MU 5270 Advanced Music Research Methods
    •    MU 5192 Graduate Recital (Lecture-Recital)
    •    2 Thesis Courses (MU5399A and MU5399B)

Electives (12 credits):

    •    up to two additional Music Literature courses (choose from MU 5310, MU 5314, MU 5315, MU 5320, MU 5340, MU 5360)
    •    MU 5325 Research in Music Education I
    •    MU 5375 Topics in Advanced Music Research and Analysis
    •    up to two Independent Studies (MU 5313 and / or MU 5317)
    •    up to 3 credits of Applied Composition Lessons [various course numbers]
    •    up to 3 credits of Applied Performance Lessons [various course numbers]
    •    MU 5365 Computing in Music
