Theory and History Proficiency Exams


NOTE: Students who do not achieve 70% on the music theory placement test will be required to take MU5357 — Graduate Music Theory and Musicianship, and students who do not achieve 70% on the music history placement test will be required to take MU5330A – History and Analysis of Music, in addition to the degree requirements listed below.

  • MU 5334 Introduction to Graduate Studies in Music — 3 credits
  • 2 Music Literature courses (choose from MU 5310, MU 5314, MU 5315, MU 5320, MU 5340, MU 5360, MU 5375) or Jazz History (pending course approval) — 6 credits
  • MU 5350 Musical Styles — 3 credits

  • 8 Credits of applied lessons
  • MU 5101 –Graduate Recital – 1 credit
  • 4 credits of Large Ensemble - MUSE 5160, MUSE 5161, or MUSE 5162
  • Jazz Pedagogy - 3 credits (pending course approval)
  • Jazz Arranging – 3 credits (pending course approval)
  • Jazz Improvisation – 3 credits (pending course approval)
  • MUSP 5130 Applied Keyboard (Jazz Piano) – 1 credit
