M.M. in Music Education – Emphasis in Latin Music

NOTE:    Students who reach less than 70% on the music theory placement test will take MU5357 Graduate Music Theory and Musicianship in addition to the degree requirements listed below.

Background Studies (either taken prior to M.M. studies, or to complete before graduating):
•    Proficiency equivalent to 2 years of Spanish in High School OR the first two semesters (1410 & 1420) of Spanish at the college level (all students in this emphasis must pass the proficiency exam in Spanish through the Texas State Modern Language Department)

Other Studies [Core] (12 credits):

•    MU 5334 Introduction to Graduate Studies in Music
•    2 Music Literature courses (choose from MU 5310, MU 5314, MU 5315, MU 5320, MU 5340, MU 5360, MU 5375) [Note: History and Literature of Latin Music can be offered under MU 5375]
•    MU 5350 Musical Styles

Major Field (12 credits):

•    MU5324 Music Curriculum & Methodology
•    MU5325 Research in Music Education I
•    MU5328 Foundations of Music Education
•    MU5327 Advanced Conducting OR MUSP 5353 Ensemble Rehearsal Techniques

Electives (12 credits):

NOTE: The smaller number of credits is the minimum number of credits a student must take in that specific category.
Ensemble Elective (3-5 credits)
•    MUSE 5103 Texas State Mariachi (min. 1 credit) – up to three semesters
•    MUSE 5102 Salsa Del Rio (min. 1 credit) – up to three semesters
•    [Jazz] MUSE 5127 or MUSE 5160 or MUSE 5161 or MUSE 5162
Instrumental Elective (1-2 credits)
•    MUSP 5165 Vihuela and Guitarrón Class

NOTE: The Final Music Education Project must be completed as part of one of these courses.
