Juanita Ulloa

Ulloa

Singer-songwriter, Juanita Ulloa, has been hailed as the High Priestess of Operachi in a Hispanicpress.org review of her trendsetting "Mujeres y mariachi" CD. She has likewise been honored as an artist in a class of her own, along with Santana (Mark Halstern, Hispanic Magazine), and is one of the world’s leading female singer/composers of Mexican “ranchera” music (mariachi), along with Latin American folk music and art song, and she books nationally and abroad as a concert performer and in master classes as an instructor, championing the growth of women's contributions to Latin American arts. Ms. Ulloa holds music degrees from Yale University (BA, Music) and the University of California at Berkeley (MA, Music) and has additional post-graduate training from the Nice Conservatory in France, Cal State Hayward, San Francisco State University, and Cal State Humboldt in Arcata, CA.

Ms. Ulloa has performed regional opera in Northern California with Pocket Opera, West Bay Opera, Berkeley Opera, Sacramento Opera, and Mother Lode Musical Theater Company, among others. She also works in voice-overs in both commercial and educational entities, such as Bank of America, Mailboxes, etc., MacMillan/McGraw-Hill, Scholastic Books and Silver, Burdett, Ginn (Pearson Music). She is an ethnomusicologist specializing in Latin American music and Hispanic vocal styles. Currently, she teaches music at Texas State University (San Marcos, Texas), University of Texas-San Antonio and Northwest Vista Community College in San Antonio, Texas. Ms. Ulloa appears with both mariachi or with symphony orchestras, including the Stockton Symphony (CA) under the baton of Peter Jaffe, Pasadena Pops (CA), La Jolla
Chamber Orchestra (CA), and the Macon Symphony (GA)). She has toured Europe, Mexico and Peru, concertizing in various Hispanic vocal music styles. Ms. Ulloa returns to Spain in July 2008, to the Barcelona Festival of Song, where she will perform and offer a Master class on Mexican art song. For more information: http://www.juanitamusic.com
