Rodney C. Schueller

Rodney C. Schueller is Associate Professor of Music, Director of Bands and Coordinator of Instrumental Performance and Ensembles at Texas State University-San Marcos. In addition to serving as chief administrator of the Department of Bands, he is Conductor of the Wind Ensemble and Chamber Winds. Dr. Schueller teaches undergraduate and graduate instrumental conducting and wind literature and serves on several committees in the School of Music. In the spring of 2007, the Texas State University Student Foundation recognized Dr. Schueller as a Texas State University Distinguished Educator.

Ensembles under his leadership have received praise from composers Steven Bryant, Mark Camphouse, Rob Deemer, Donald Grantham, Timothy Kramer, Timothy Mahr, Russell Riepe, Jack Stamp, Joe Stuessy, and Frank Ticheli among others. The Texas State University Wind Ensemble performed for the Southwestern Division Conference of the College Band Directors National Association in 2008, the Texas Music Educators Association Convention in 2007, and the South Central Chapter Conference of the College Music Society in 2006.

Dr. Schueller earned a Bachelor of Music degree in Trumpet Performance and Music Education from the University of Iowa, a Master of Music degree in Wind Conducting from Indiana University, and a Doctor of Musical Arts degree in Wind Conducting from Michigan State University. He studied wind conducting with Ray E. Cramer and John L. Whitwell, with additional studies in orchestral conducting with James Dixon and Leon Gregorian.

Dr. Schueller is a contributing author to five volumes in the Teaching Music Through Performance in Band series published by GIA and has published articles in the Bandmasters Review, The Instrumentalist and MBM Times. He has co-presented clinic sessions at the 2005 Texas Bandmasters Association Clinic and Convention and the 2007 Midwest International Band and Orchestra Clinic.

As Director of the Bobcat Marching Band during the 2003 through 2006 seasons, the marching band grew from 165 to 225 members. The marching band was honored at the 2007 national conference of the College Band Directors National Association as one of five bands to be part of the first-ever video breakout session.

Professor Schueller is active as an adjudicator, clinician and guest conductor. He holds honorary memberships in Kappa Kappa Psi, Tau Beta Sigma, Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia, and Sigma Alpha Iota. He is currently a member of the College Band Directors National Association, National Band Association, and both the Texas Music Educators Association and Texas Bandmasters Association, where he is a member of the College Advisory Board.
