John A. Lopez

John A. Lopez
John A. Lopez serves as Marching Percussion Coordinator and is in his fifth year as a member of the faculty at Texas State where he has achieved the tenure- track position of Assistant Professor. His duties include directing, arranging, and composing for the Texas State Drumline; directing Salsa Del Rio, a Salsa and Latin jazz ensemble; directing the Texas State Percussion Ensemble; directing the Texas State Drum Circle; teaching percussion methods; teaching Ear Training; and teaching Applied Percussion.

Under Mr. Lopez's direction, the Texas State Drumline has grown from approximately 25 members to 50+, and the percussion program has increased from 14 music majors to over 50. The Texas State Drumline is in demand for performances in area drumline contests, including the Brackenridge Drumline Competition and the Belton Drumline Competition. The Texas State Drumline is also very active in the Percussive Acts Society Indoor Competition, and placed in the top five at the 1996 competition in Nashville, Tennessee.

While only in its third year of existence, Salsa del Rio has grown to be one of the most entertaining and in-demand campus ensembles. The group has traveled to France to perform in the Carnival de Nice in 1996 and to Switzerland to perform in the Montreux Jazz Festival in 1997. The group recently completed a performance tour in Huatulco, Mexico, in the spring of 1998. One of the group's recordings was chosen for a 1996 Down Beat Music Award for best sound recording.

Mr. Lopez is an active clinician in the field of percussion education and has served as a instructor at Texas State's band and drumline camps for 8 years. He also regularly serves as a clinician for schools across central Texas, San Antonio, Austin, Houston, and south Texas. In 1997, he and several other percussion educators formed "The Percussion Collective," an organization providing a yearly drumline camp for San Antonio area middle and high school students.

Besides actively teaching music he has performed with both the Austin and Mid-Texas Symphony Orchestras, and numerous jazz, salsa, and Latin jazz groups in the San Antonio and Austin Areas.
