Daris Word Hale

Daris Word Hale is currently executive director of Chamber Music Austin and the bassoonist of the Wild Basis Winds quintet. This group just completed a South American tour while premiering Donald Grantham's latest work for woodwind quintet. Her Texas commitments include principle bassoonist of the Victoria Symphony (1996 - present) and second bassoonist of the Austin Symphony and the Austin Lyric Opera Orchestra (1993 - present). Additional orchestral engagements include five seasons with the Spoleto USA Festival Orchestra (1994 - 1999), and two seasons with the International Festival at Round Top (1993 - 1994). She has performed with the Festival of Two Worlds in Spoleto, Italy, as well as the Victoria Bach Festival and the New Texas Festival. As a member of the Texas Tumbleweeds Quintet, she was a finalist in the prestigious Coleman Chamber Ensemble Competition in 1994.
Daris has taught bassoon at Southwestern University since 1995 and is a half-time faculty member at Texas State University since 1998. She holds a bachelor and master's degree in bassoon performance from the University of Texas ('93, '96). Her hobby is training horses.
