Music building room 119 (“Jazz Combo Room”)
· Trumpets/trombones/saxes You will be asked to read a lead sheet of a jazz standard and improvise on the tune.
· Piano and Guitar: Knowledge of jazz voicings and comping styles is required to be placed in a jazz ensemble/combo. Student will be asked to solo over changes as well.
· Bassists: walking/time-keeping in swing, bossa nova, ballad etc..
· Drummers: ability to demonstrate grooves in multiple styles -swing, bossa nova, ballad/brushes
· Singers: bring a song to sing in the jazz style. Jazz Standards are preferred
Placement in a combo is through audition only. Bring a completed schedule card to your audition.
Jazz Big Band auditions are low-pressure, and consist of the following:
Saxes/Trumpets/Trombones
Audition consists of:
1. A short prepared excerpt of your choosing (jazz ensemble part, transcribed solo, etude, etc.)
2. Sight-reading
3. Improvisation - optional, but encouraged.
Play along accompaniment will be provided.
Rhythm Section
Rhythm section players audition in sections and will be asked sight-read charts and demonstrate jazz style competency
(walking/timekeeping in swing, bossa nova, ballad etc.).
Guitar Players: Knowledge of jazz voicings and comping styles is required to be placed in a jazz ensemble/combo
